Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi To Decide P Chidambaram’s Fate

Former Union Finance and Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court requesting protection from arrest a day after teams of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) reached his home to arrest him in the INX Media case.

P Chidambaram is being represented by four lawyers Kapil Sibal, Vivek Tankha, Salman Khurshid and Dayan Krishnan in the Supreme Court. His team of lawyers are challenging the Delhi High Court’s order which on Tuesday revoked the interim protection from arrest that was granted to Chidambaram last year.

On May 31, 2018 the Delhi High Court had granted Chidambaram interim protection. This was to continue until (Tuesday) August 20, 2019. On January 25, the court heard arguments on Chidambaram’s plea and the judgment was reserved. On Tuesday, the court rejected Chidambaram’s bail application, following which the CBI and ED sent teams to arrest him.

In his plea to the Top Court Chidambaram said that there is no allegation that he is likely to flee justice; or that he is likely to influence the witnesses; or that he is likely to tamper with the evidence. He says that the charges levelled against him are baseless and the case is politically motivated.

Another argument by Chidambaram is the fact that the CBI had summoned him only once (on June 6, 2018) and that he “duly appeared and answered all questions” and thereafter the agency did not issue any other summons. Chidambaram pleaded that he is a sitting Rajya Sabha MP and there are no chances of him fleeing the country. He has also argued that there is no need for the investigating agencies to arrest him and then question.

The Enforcement Directorate has issued a look-out notice for P Chidambaram. In the Supreme Court, his plea has been referred to Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, who will decide if the case merits an urgent hearing or not.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday slammed the government and alleged that P Chidambaram was being “hunted down” for speaking the truth. Priyanka tweeted: “An extremely qualified and respected member of the Rajya Sabha, Chidambaram ji has served our nation with loyalty for decades including as finance minister and home minister. He unhesitatingly speaks truth to power and exposes the failures of this government but the truth is inconvenient to cowards so he is being shamefully hunted down. We stand by him and will continue to fight for the truth no matter what the consequences are.”
