Defending champions Australia clinched an 87 run win over Sri Lanka in their World Cup 2019 match in London on Saturday. Australia now are on top of the World Cup points table with 8 points from 5 matches.
Finch led the team from the front, notching up his career best score in ODI (153 from just 132 balls) as Australia posted a humongous total of 334 for 7 in their quota of 50 overs. Finch started with a bang, taking the Sri Lanka pacers to the cleaners even as he made up for yet another slow start from David Warner.
Australia’s opening duo added 86 before spinner Dhananjaya de Silva struck by castling David Warner on 26 (48 balls). De Silva returned to remove Usman Khawaja in the 23rd over just after Australia had reached the 100-run mark.
Aaron Finch and Mitchell Starc starred on in London on Saturday. Earlier Finch and Smith single handedly took the game away from them with a 173 run stand. Both Smith and Finch kept the scorers busy as they went after the Sri Lanka attack to set a big platform for a strong finish. Finch had hit 5 sixes and 15 boundaries whereas Smith’s 59 ball 73 had a six and 7 boundaries.
However, Australia lost Finch and Smith in successive overs but Glenn Maxwell made sure they finished strong with after he smashed 46 off 25 balls.
Later when Sri Lanka came to chase, Kusal Perera and Dimuth Karunaratne stitched a 115-run opening stand. But, Perera fell to Mitchell Starc on 52.
Captain Karunaratne battled on but there was a bit too much burden on him as wickets kept falling at the opposite end at regular intervals. Lahiru Thirimanne and Kusal Mendis got starts but were unable to convert them into solid contributions.
Stac and Pat Cummins butchered through Lanka’s middle order. Angelo Mathews and Thisara Perera failed yet again. Mitchell Starc, finished with figures of 55 for 4, and Kane Richardson (3/41). Glenn Maxwell was handed over a 10 over quota who did good.
