At least 19 people were killed and dozens were trapped after a massive explosion took place today at a firecracker making factory in Punjab’s Gurdaspur.
The incident took place around 4 pm at the factory located in a residential area in Gurdaspur’s Batala, Inspector General (Border Range) SPS Parmar said.
The firecracker factory was a three-storey structure and completely crumbled due to the impact of the explosion. Not only did the factory completely destroy, but also nearby buildings, cars and bikes within a radius of 1 kilometer were damaged.
President of India Ram Nath Kovind tweeted, “Saddened to learn about the loss of lives due to an explosion at a firecracker factory in Batala, Punjab. Condolences to bereaved families impacted by this tragedy and wishing an early recovery to those injured.”
Vice President of India M Venkaiah Naidu tweeted, “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives in an explosion in a firecracker factory in Gurdaspur, Punjab today. My condolences to the bereaved families and wishes for speedy recovery of the injured.”
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh expressed shock over the loss of life in the incident, adding that rescue operations are underway with the District Collector and the Senior Superintendent of Police heading the relief efforts.
“Deeply anguished to learn the loss of life due to the blast in the firecracker factory in Batala. Rescue operations are underway with the DC and the SSP heading relief efforts,” Amarinder tweeted.
Gurdaspur MP Sunny Deol too expressed grief over the incident in a tweet, “Saddened to hear about the news of blast in Batala factory. NDRF teams and local administration have been rushed for rescue operation.”
National Disaster Response Force or NDRF and the State Disaster Response Force or SDRF are aiding rescue operations. Senior police and district administration are also present on site.
