Former Kolkata mayor Sovan Chatterjee joined the BJP on Wednesday. Chatterjee was supposed to one of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s closest aides and he is BJP’s biggest catch in Bengal after Mukul Roy.
Sovan Chatterjee, a two-time Mayor, has always been close to Mamata Banerjee and was with the Trinamool Congress from its birth.
Chatterjee is an MLA from Behala Purba assembly constituency. His friend and close aide Baisakhi Banerjee also joined the BJP.
After a fallout with Banerjee he quit as Kolkata Mayor and state minister in Bengal in November last year.
Chatterjee was known to be a fundraiser for the ruling Trinamool Congress in Bengal.
In 2017, he was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI in the Narada sting case. He was one of the Trinamool leaders purportedly seen taking cash from the journalist who conducted the sting.
Since the BJP won 18 of the 42 parliamentary seats in the state, six TMC MLAs and one each of Congress and CPI(M) have switched over to the BJP.
