India’s Sumit Nagal Gives Roger Federer a Scare in Round 1 of US Open

Indian Singles Tennis Player, Sumit Nagal made Roger Federer toil at the US Open and also became the first Indian to win a set against GOAT Roger Federer.

The Indian who had to play the qualifying rounds just to earn a dream Grand Slam debut, put up a spirited performance against Federer taking the Swiss star down 6-4 in the first set.

Federer came back strong in the next few sets to defeat Nagal, 4-6 6-1 6-2 6-4.




After the match on being asked about his thoughts on Nagal, Federer said: “Never easy to come out and play your best. Even though it’s kind of what you live for, you dream about, playing on the big stage. So I think he did that very well. He knows what he can bring. That’s why I think he’s going to have a very solid career.”

Nagal who is ranked 190th in the world was the sixth Indian to win the Wimbledon junior Grand Slam Title.

In 2015 he revealed that he was found of cricket during his childhood, but his father asked him to try other sport. That was when he picked up tennis. Mahesh Bhupathi has had a big role in his life and how he assisted and monitored him with the game and finding him money to pursue the sport.



Rafael Nadal has been a source of inspiration to Nagal.

Before his face-off against Federer, Nagal was backed up cricket skipper Virat Kohli, tennis star Rohan Bopanna and Bollywood star Lara Dutta.
