Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was detained near Varanasi by the Uttar Pradesh police, preventing her to travel to Sonbhadra district, where 10 persons were gunned down by a village head and his men over a land dispute on Wednesday.
The administration imposed section 144 in and around Sonbhadra.
While being taken away she said : “No matter what they do, we won’t budge. We have only come here to meet the families peacefully.”
Ms. Vadra earlier visited the injured people at the trauma centre in BHU in Varanasi.
Ten persons were killed and over 24 injured in a shooting over land dispute. Village head, Yagya Dutt and his supporters fired on a group of tribal farmers who had refused to give up the land they had tilled for generations. Witnesses claim that Dutt brought 200 men on 32 tractor trolleys to seize the land. After, tribals opposed Dutt and his associates fired at them for over half-an-hours.
Until now 24 people were arrested, the police have registered an FIR against 61 people in total.
UP Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath blamed the Congress for the incident claiming : “The Congress governments in the past have provided protection to land mafias and the Sonbhadra incident is an example of that.”
